One of the first choices you make as an airsoft player: indoor (CQB) or outdoor (woodland)? Both are a blast, but they feel completely different and call for different gear. Indoor (CQB) in short
CQB stands for close quarters battle: playing at short range in halls, bunkers, basements or mock buildings. Think narrow corridors, rooms, corners and limited sightlines. The pace is high – you meet opponents up close, react fast and switch positions constantly.
- Ranges / engagement: often from a few metres to a couple of dozen metres. Clearing corners and reacting quickly matter more than long-range precision.
- FPS limits: indoor limits are usually lower than outdoor, precisely because close hits sting. Many fields set a lower cap plus sometimes a "surrender" rule at very short range.
- Weather: a big plus – indoors you are unaffected by rain or cold. Ideal year-round and great for your very first session.
Outdoor (woodland) in short
Woodland is played in forest, heathland or open terrain. Bigger play areas, more space and a calmer, more tactical game. Patience, positioning and teamwork count for more here.
- Ranges / engagement: medium to long. A replica with a bit more reach and consistency pays off, and you have more time to move and flank.
- FPS limits: outdoor fields often allow a higher limit, because distances are greater. More powerful replicas (sniper/DMR) usually come with a minimum engagement distance.
- Weather: you are outside, so cold, rain and mud are part of the deal. With the right clothing that is no problem – in fact, many players see it as part of the charm.
Pace and play style
Do you love fast, adrenaline-fuelled, short rounds full of action? Then CQB is your thing. Prefer tactics, patience and larger scenarios? Then woodland suits you better. Which gun fits?
Your terrain choice largely decides your ideal replica:
- Indoor / CQB: a short, nimble AEG or SMG shines in tight spaces. Short barrel, quick to aim around corners, easy to carry. A sidearm (pistol) is handy here too.

Clothing and protection
- Indoor: often warmer and with lots of movement, so go for light, breathable clothing. Camouflage matters less because sightlines and distances are short. Full eye protection is always mandatory; a lower-face mask can be comfortable against close hits.
